Innovaccer Unveils AI Agents to Combat Physician Burnout

As the healthcare industry grapples with escalating burnout rates among physicians and nurses, Innovaccer has introduced a suite of AI-powered assistants designed to reduce administrative burdens and improve patient care. On Monday, the health-tech company announced its “Agents of Care” initiative, marking a significant step toward integrating artificial intelligence into clinical workflows.

Designed to automate repetitive, low-value tasks, the new AI-driven agents free up medical professionals to focus on patient interactions. The initiative comes amid increasing concerns over labor shortages in healthcare, with a projected shortfall of 100,000 critical workers by 2028, according to consulting firm Mercer.

Speaking with CNBC, Innovaccer CEO Abhinav Shashank underscored the urgency of AI adoption in healthcare.

“We just don’t have enough capacity in the health system to serve everyone to the degree they deserve,” Shashank said. “The need for an agentic workforce to supplement our caregivers is high.”

According to an October Google Cloud study, clinicians spend nine hours per week on documentation alone. By automating such administrative tasks, Innovaccer’s AI agents aim to alleviate the strain on healthcare providers while improving operational efficiency.

Innovaccer, which serves over 60 million patients across 100+ U.S. health systems, has been building AI-driven solutions to streamline data exchange and administrative processes since its founding in 2014. The newly launched “Agents of Care” suite includes seven AI-powered assistants and plans for further expansion.

In a demonstration, the agent assisted a patient experiencing difficulty obtaining pain medication following an ankle injury. It promptly escalated the concern to a care manager and scheduled a follow-up call.

  • Referral Agent: The agent automates patient referrals by calling to schedule appointments with specialists and providing reminders about required documents.
  • Appointment Management & 24/7 Patient Support Agents: These agents handle automated scheduling, rescheduling, and general inquiries, reducing healthcare providers’ administrative overhead.

Innovaccer has been testing the AI agents at five health systems. The protocol intake agent is the most utilized due to its efficient ability to check in with patients after their visits.

The company’s investment in AI is backed by a $275 million funding round announced in January. Key investors include Generation Investment Management (co-founded by Al Gore), Kaiser Permanente, and Microsoft’s M12venture fund.

Shashank emphasized that the broader goal of “Agents of Care” is to improve accessibility and efficiency in healthcare delivery.

“If AI can impact anywhere, healthcare is the one place where it’s needed,” he said.

The new AI suite is launching with existing Innovaccer customers, with complete market availability expected within the next two to three months.
