Healthgrades has released its list of top hospitals nationwide for exceptional care via its "America's Best Hospitals" awards. Released Jan. 17, and segmented by America's 50, 100 and 250 best hospitals, which represent the top 1%, 2%, and 5% of hospitals in the nation, respectively.

Twelve California hospitals made the top 50 list, with Scripps Green as the only local hospital included. Scripps Green was also included on the list for 2021 and 2022.

Scripps Mercy Hospital San Diego and Chula Vista (2022 and 2023) and Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas (2021, 2022, and 2023) both made the list of the top 100 best hospitals.

Healthgrades used 2019-21 Medicare data to evaluate the performance of nearly 4,500 U.S. hospitals in treating 31 conditions and procedures, including heart attack, pneumonia, and sepsis. For more information on the methodology, clickhere.

When it comes to why these rankings are important, Dr. Brad Bowman, chief medical officer at Healthgrades said that identifying the “top 1, 2 and 5% of hospitals takes the guesswork out of making a decision that could have life-or-death implications,” according to healthline.com

“Access to objective, easy-to-understand measures of hospital quality is increasingly important to consumers, more than half of whom are more concerned about the quality of care they receive today as a result of the pandemic,” Bowman explained. “Consumers who pick an America’s Best Hospital have a significantly better chance of experiencing a positive outcome across a range of common conditions and procedures, from heart failure to joint replacement.”
