Scripps Health announced plans to advance with the long-awaited development of a new medical center campus in San Marcos, signaling a significant investment in healthcare access for North San Diego County.

The future Scripps San Marcos Medical Center, located on a 13-acre site just south of State Route 78 near Twin Oaks Valley Parkway, will be built in two key phases, The first will include a state-of-the-art ambulatory care facility, offering multi-specialty and primary care physician offices, ambulatory surgery, cancer care, advanced imaging, laboratory services, and more. The second phase will see the addition of a 200- to 250-bed acute care hospital providing comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services.

Scripps Health President and CEO Chris Van Gorder noted that the organization initially purchased 80 acres in San Marcos in 1990 but held off on building until the local population grew significantly. “Scripps provides care to many residents of the San Marcos region today,” Van Gorder said. “This campus will expand access and make care more convenient for these patients and their families.”

Over the past four years, Scripps has been carefully master-planning the campus, conducting studies, and preparing the site with roadways, grading, and utilities. Last week, the Scripps Health Board of Trustees approved the facility plan, allowing development efforts to move forward officially.

The City of San Marcos has supported the vision from the start. “A major player like Scripps choosing to invest in San Marcos is exciting on so many levels,” said San Marcos Mayor Rebecca Jones. “We’ve worked hard to become a premier healthcare hub in the region… and Scripps’ commitment aligns perfectly with that goal.”

The acute care hospital portion of the project will be subject to state-level oversight, and planning and collaboration between Scripps, the City of San Marcos, and the State of California will continue.
